A Seat At The Table

From Steve Mertl, Vancouver BC:
Tony and I knew each other professionally for years. We covered many a new car "long lead" event, day-long detailed previews of new car models usually broken up by lunch. I always tried to sit at Ted's table (his Driver's Seat partner Ted Laturnus was often there, too) because I knew the conversation would be bright and informative for someone like me, who didn't cover the auto business full time (made a nice break from the hard news of politics, crime and natural disasters I covered at CP). He and Ted were yin-yang; Tony's easy-going courtly manner perfectly balanced Ted's crusty directness. I usually learned something that helped me put the day's event in context.
After I retired I got into collecting vintage watches. Tony recommended I connect with his watchmaker, Norbert, which turned out to be a good tip because Norbert rescued more than one grotty vintage piece for me.
My sincere condolences to Tony's family and his many, many friends.
